User profiles plugin for WordPress?

Need a rich membership/user profile plugin for a website I'm building with WP -- must include customizable fields for user information (location, age, interests, education, etc.), as well as ability for users to "friend" each other. Other features like private messaging, photo galleries, etc. would be a bonus. I've browsed the the directory and found some plugins like El Aleph and Profiler that might do what I'm after, but I'd love some feedback. What worked for you? Is there a combination of more narrowly-purposed plugins that would achieve the same effect?
