Wordpress blog, Wordpress scripts, Akismet key?

I started a Wordpress blog and downloaded a Wordpress ZIP file with css and php scripts. When I registered I received an Akismet key, which is supposed to control spam. How do they all fit together? So far this is what I have; http://orange1.wordpress.com/ The blog is on the Wordpress server. The Wordpress.zip file is on my PC. The zip file does not have a setup or installation exe or batch. I can manually create a plugin directory on my PC but how does that block spam on the server?

  1. Might be a stupid question, but have you read the akismet instructions? Seems very simple to me. I might even try it on my site (not that I've really had a spam problem). Instructions: http://akismet.com/download/
  2. It sounds like maybe you have discovered the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org? To have full control over your WordPress, you need to install the open-source software (from the .org site) on your own server. You then have complete control over what add-in modules and widgets you want to install. I just did a tutorial for a client on how to set this up.
